Nice Coffee Co.

In 2019, I had the opportunity to travel with the founders of Nice Coffee Co. to Kibera, the largest slum in Africa. It’s difficult to comprehend the scale of life there—an estimated one million people living in an area smaller than New York’s Central Park.

As a social enterprise, Nice Coffee Co. brews the ‘Nicest coffee’ with a greater purpose: to help fund education for children at St John’s School in Kibera.

Alongside journalist Carrie-Anne Greenbank and cinematographer Jude Kalman, we documented daily life in the slum, capturing moments of joy, resilience, and deep need etched across so many faces.

These images were published in The Age, used in the creation of the coffee table book Kibera, and shared across web and social platforms to help generate support for Nice Coffee Co.

There is a joy in capturing moments that may help make a difference - even while navigating muddy alleyways where the smells make you pause and reconsider what that ‘mud’ might actually be.
